Making a Difference for Children in Special Education: How and Why You Should Get Involved in the NH Legislative Process

Legislative Training Focused on Education/Special Education Issues Being Offered
The Parent Information Center has been working with several other agencies, including the Moore Center, NH Council on Developmental Disabilities, Disabilities Rights Center, and Council for Children and Adolescents with Chronic Health Conditions to inform parents of the importance of getting involved in the legislative process, to demystify it, and to discuss a few of the bills that are being considered this year that will affect school-age children with disabilities and their parents. This workshop will focus just on education bills.
Monday, March 19, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Moore Center in Manchester
New Hampshire is fortunate to have many people (parents, educators, policy-makers and others) who actively participated in the development of our special education law and regulations, as well as other laws that impact children and families. NH’s special education law and regulations are more proactive and clear than the Federal law, they include procedures that support parent involvement in the special education process, that prepare children with disabilities for life after high school, and that protect children with disabilities. But, whether we keep those important rights and protections depends on all of us. Come to this workshop to learn how you can advocate on issues, including special education, which are important to your child, your family and your community.
This workshop will provide an overview of the NH legislative process, including strategies and tips to help you feel more comfortable and confident as you become involved in positive systems change. Materials include a resource guide, “Golden Rules for Advocates when Dealing with Elected Officials” and a summary of key education-related bills currently before the legislature.
The workshop is free, but to ensure that there are sufficient materials for participants, pre-registration is required. To pre-register or for more information, please contact the Parent Information Center by March 14th at 1-800-947-7005 or 603-224-7005. If you call after hours, please leave a message on extension 110 or 111. You may also register by e-mail at admin@picnh.org If you require special accommodations, please advise us when registering.

Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings, and other interventions designed to help learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community than would be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education. http://binaereoptionen.blogspot.com
